Aeroporti di Roma celebrates Leonardo da Vinci, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death (1519-2019)
On the occasion of the five-hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, Aeroporti di Roma has launched an art contest dedicated to works of contemporary arts inspired by Leonardo’s famous theme of the “journey”.
More than 50 Italian and international artists – under 40-years-old for the Young category and over 40- years-old for the Over category – presented their projects to participate to the competition; among them, the six finalist artists selected are Marco Bagnoli, Massimo Bartolini, Sam Falls, Alda Marini Iacoianni, Diego Perrone e Silvia Scaringella.
Using white marble from the Apuan Alps, the six sculptors have conceived and created statues aimed at representing at best the very spirit of Leonardo’s genius.
In December 2019, the artists worked live at the airport to complete their sculptures, which will remain on display at Terminal 3 until February 2020 to allow visitors to vote their favourite artwork.
Once completed, the sculptures will be transferred to boarding area E, where the first prize winners for each category will be awarded on the basis of the jury’s evaluation.
Each sculpture is made of white marble from the Apuan Alps, accompanied by various materials or colours
The works, selected from approximately 50 proposals, are inspired by Leonardo and the theme of travel.
People can vote online for one of the six works created by the finalist artists: by visiting the section dedicated to the artists, the works and profiles of each finalist can be viewed and visitors can vote for their favourite work directly on the page.
