Leonardo & il viaggio
Beyond the boundaries of mankind and space

Beyond the boundaries of mankind and space
To celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death, Aeroporti di Roma’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport has launched an international contemporary art competition, aimed at creating six works of art inspired by the Leonardo-style theme of travel; participating in the competition are artists belonging to the “Young” category, for those born after 31/12/1978 and to the “Over” category, intended for those born before 01/01/1979.

The purpose of the initiative is to support and promote contemporary artistic and creative talent through the celebration of the genius of the Renaissance, in a location where cultural diversity is an essential concept: in fact, Fiumicino, Italy’s largest airport, with passenger traffic of almost 43 million travellers in 2018 alone, is the ideal crossroads where different ideas, cultures and styles converge every day.

The six works of art selected for the competition will be displayed to passengers in Terminal 3 until February 2020; the works will then be transferred to board area E as of March 2020.

Each piece of work, in order to best represent the spirit of Leonardo’s genius, covers the concepts of freedom, speed, dynamism, technology and innovation, as well as the timely and analytical study of the human body and nature as tools to for overcoming human and territorial boundaries.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward; for there you have been, and there you long to return.
